Happy December! As 2025 comes to a close, this season invites us to pause, celebrate, and look ahead with gratitude and hope. December is filled with meaningful moments and traditions, and we honor the many celebrations observed by our community, including Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the welcoming of the New Year. These occasions remind us of the values we share—connection, generosity, reflection, and joy.
Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers for your enthusiastic participation in December to Remember. Your involvement, time, and support made this month especially meaningful for our students and staff. Together, we created memorable experiences that strengthened our school community and brought learning to life beyond the classroom.
Our two-week holiday break begins on Saturday, December 20, and continues through Sunday, January 4. We hope this time offers opportunities to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments with family and friends. Whether you are traveling or enjoying a slower pace at home, everyday activities can become powerful learning experiences.
Here are a few simple, family-friendly ideas to keep curiosity and creativity growing over the break:
- Winter Reading Fun: Snuggle up and read together each day! Be sure to check out the attached WES Winter Reading Bingo, which turns reading into a fun challenge while encouraging a variety of genres and activities.
- Kindergarten–1st Grade: Read aloud daily, point out letters, and sight words, and ask simple questions about the story.
- 2nd–3rd Grade: Take turns reading, discuss characters and settings, and encourage short written or drawn responses.
- 4th–5th Grade: Explore longer chapter books, nonfiction texts, and have students summarize or share opinions about what they read.
- Math Made Easy: A few minutes a day practicing math facts can make a big difference.
- Kindergarten–1st Grade: Practice counting, number recognition, and simple addition or subtraction using everyday objects.
- 2nd–3rd Grade: Review addition, subtraction, and begin multiplication facts through games or flashcards.
- 4th–5th Grade: Strengthen multiplication and division facts and apply skills to word problems or real-life math situations.
- Word Power: Encourage students to review their spelling bee word lists through creative activities.
- Kindergarten–1st Grade: Practice spelling patterns and sight words using songs, tracing, or magnetic letters.
- 2nd–3rd Grade: Write sentences with spelling words, play word games, or practice with a family partner.
- 4th–5th Grade: Challenge students to define words, use them in writing, or quiz a family member.
- Cooking and baking together: Practice math through measuring, timing, and adjusting recipes, while encouraging teamwork and responsibility.
- Creative projects: Crafts, journaling, music, or storytelling help children express themselves and build confidence.
- Reflection and goal setting: Invite children to reflect on what they learned this year and set a personal goal for the year ahead.
As winter weather settles in, please remember to stay warm and safe. Bundle up, enjoy the beauty of the season, and take care and be safe as you travel or spend time outdoors.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for supporting our mission to nurture a love of learning at home and at school. We are grateful for you and wish your family a peaceful, joyful, and bright holiday season.

I’m excited to invite your student to participate in our Winter Break Reading Bingo! This is a fun and voluntary activity designed to keep the joy of reading alive during the holidays.
Here’s how it works:
Students choose from a variety of literacy-based activities on the bingo board.
Complete five activities in a row to get a bingo—though students are welcome to do as many activities as they’d like!
Many activities highlight our digital collection, which includes eBooks, audiobooks, read-alongs, and several databases. Students have already learned how to access these resources in the Information Center, and I’ve attached instructions to this email as well.
Students can print the bingo board and mark off completed activities or simply write down the activities they completed. Please have students turn in their bingo boards by January 8th to join our special reward: Cozy Reading Time—bring a blanket or something snuggly and enjoy free reading time in front of a digital fire in January!
Thank you for supporting reading at home. Have a relaxing and safe winter break!
Warmly,
Rebekah O’Dell
